    I also have a portable Remington with that same ribbon mechanism. It was actually one of the first things I figured out about the machine, as when I got mine the ribbon was not switching properly. I was enchanted by the mechanism and kept going on to my husband about how ‘clever’ it was. 🙂

      All it takes is one clever little thing like that, and then before you know it, you’re hooked for good… those fiendishly clever designers knew exactly what they were doing! 😀
