Wagging The Long Tail

Can’t believe I came across a reference to Chris Anderson’s “long tail” this morning. Wow, I didn’t think anyone still remembered, considering:

Chris Anderson's Long Tail

What’s next, an article about the Cognitive Surplus? Ooh! Ooh! I know! The Singularity! (*eye roll*)

  1. The singularity seems far more likely than Chris Anderson being right, but given the numbers of people who swear by his books — and the number who quoted chapter and verse of “Free” as a justification for my working for zilch — I’d suggest the collective consciousness needed to launch the singularity is probably farther off than we thought too…

    😀

I have to admit, though, his notions have certainly provided me with a healthy amount of fodder here on Sotto Voce over the years. It would be so totally cool if an economy really did work the way it appears to work when we’re 14 years old — a wonderland where not only do you get an allowance for doing piddly stuff (or even for doing nothing at all), but you also get tons of stuff for free just by asking (or whining) for it, plus you get to live in a house where the refrigerator magically replenishes itself and new clothes materialize in your closet — but alas it just doesn’t.

That reminds me, a few years ago I posted this helpful graphic to explain how the “webonomics” model works…

Today’s xkcd pretty much captures the same theme: http://xkcd.com/1021/. (Amazing how dated “Web 2.0” sounds now, innit?)
